Yayasan Konservasi RASI

Who Are We?

Yayasan Konservasi RASI (Conservation Foundation for Rare Aquatic Species of Indonesia) was legally established in 2000 as an Indonesian non-profit, non-governmental organization. YK-RASI is the brainchild of founder and director Budiono and scientific program leader Danielle Kreb and was founded out of deep concern for the survival of the Mahakam River dolphins and other amazing but threatened wildlife in the Mahakam River watershed.

RASI’s name was derived from one of three mythological animal protectors of the Mahakam, Rasi, a dragon-headed water snake together with Lembuswana and Gabus. Our organization aims to help to prevent habitat loss and extinction of important aquatic dependent species to contribute to the world’s biodiversity. Our programs and projects follow a scientific, policy and awareness approach and our major program focuses on the protection and sustainable management of natural resources in the Middle Mahakam River, Lakes and Wetlands Area in East Kalimantan including protection of rare, endangered or threatened species with a special focus on the Mahakam River dolphins. Besides, RASI also undertakes research on marine mammals in Indonesia and raises awareness about their status.
